Felt Area Rugs

NOVEMBER 8-12, 2023
In this 5-day workshop students will make their own thick, fully functional felt area rug. The rug will be intricately patterned with geometric designs in the various natural colors of undyed wool. Students will make their own prefelt and learn to “kick” the felt, with a dance-like rhythm that can be sustained for days on end. Jo will introduce a traditional no-waste design approach and guide students with improvisational composition. All experience levels are welcome, and no prior felt making experience is necessary to participate. All workshops run from 9AM- 5PM with an hour for lunch in the middle of the day.

Below are descriptions of past workshops which can serve as examples for what I can offer.
FELTBEATING 101
Traditional methods for making functional and durable floor felts
GROUP RUGMAKING WORKSHOP
In this three-and-a-half day course you will design and make your own small rug (approximately 2.5 x 3.5 ft.) Attendance is limited to 4 students. Cost: $420 + materials
minimum participation: 2
PRIVATE RUGMAKING WORKSHOP
This four-and-a-half-day course can be scheduled at your convenience, either as five consecutive days or over two weekends (Friday afternoon through Sunday, and then Saturday and Sunday the following week). You will design and make you own large rug (approximately 3.5 x 5 ft.) Cost: $850 + materials

Build large-scale three-dimensional objects using only ancient technologies
GROUP 3D WORKSHOP
A straightforward method with myriad potentials: You will learn how to make prefelt, prepare soap paste, graft large pieces of dry prefelt, and work on big projects that are nevertheless lightweight and manageable.
Prerequisite: completion of one of our Feltbeating 101 workshops. Cost: $540 + materials
minimum participation: 2
PRIVATE 3D WORKSHOP
This five-day course can be scheduled at your convenience, either as five consecutive days or in two segments. The first three days must be consecutive. You will design and execute a large scale project of your choosing. Cost: $900 + materials
